About CHI Unscripted

Chicago doesn’t ease you in. It hits you with wind off the lake and a skyline that stops you cold.

We’d been through the city before — quick layovers, a conference here and there, the kind of visit where you see Millennium Park and feel like you’ve done it. But at some point, something shifted. We started going deeper. Finding the neighborhoods that locals actually live in. Eating at the counters of Polish delis and Vietnamese spots that don’t have websites. Walking the South Side on a Saturday morning when the city belongs to the people who actually live there.

And somewhere between a stranger in Pilsen who spent twenty minutes explaining the neighborhood’s history without being asked, and a parking attendant in Wicker Park who flagged us down to tell us we were about to get towed — we got it.

That’s the Chicago that doesn’t make the travel blogs. The one that’s genuinely warm under the tough exterior, endlessly layered, and alive in ways that have nothing to do with deep dish pizza and the Bean.

We kept talking about it long after we left.

What This Site Is

Chi Unscripted is a local guide built for people who want more than just the surface level.

We cover what other guides consider too dry to mention — parking, traffic, the boot and tow system, tickets, and the real logistics of getting around one of America’s most drivable and most frustrating cities at the same time. Because that’s the foundational stuff that actually determines whether your Chicago trip goes smoothly or completely sideways.

Nothing ruins a visit faster than a $60 parking ticket, a $185 tow fee, and a morning spent at the city impound lot on the West Side.

The glamorous content is everywhere. The practical reality is harder to find. Yes, we cover the Riverwalk, the music festivals, the neighborhoods, and the food. But we start with the practical — because that’s what you actually need before anything else.

We write the guide we wish we’d had when we first arrived.

A Note on Our Content

Every post on this site is written with honest, firsthand research and real opinions. We use affiliate links on some of our guides — if you book a parking spot or grab tickets through our links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps keep the lights on and the site running, and we only ever recommend things we would actually use ourselves.

Thanks for being here.
